Madden Hangs 'Em Up

Long-time broadcaster John Madden has decided to call it quits after 30 years in the booth. Most of those years with his long-time partner Pat Summerall.

Madden was with CBS until 1994 when they lost the right to broadcast games. He then went to FOX until 2002. Then he left FOX to become the lead analyst for ABC's Monday Night Football with Al Michaels until 2006 when ESPN took over Monday Night Football. His latest job was with NBC on their "Sunday Night Football" with Al Michaels also.

Replacing Madden will be Cris Collinsworth. This is a shame. With the retirement of John Madden and the insertion of Collinsworthless, there has been a dark cloud placed over the game for a while.

I will miss John Madden on the mic. His insight was a little different but he was a familiar voice for me.

Let's Kick-Off The NHL Playoffs

The NHL playoffs are starting tonight. This is a pretty exciting time of year, it's the only time that anyone gives hockey any attention. Let's break it down:

Eastern Conference:

Boston (1) vs. Montreal (8) - I can't see Boston losing in the first round. They have more talent than the Habs. Milan Lucic is a stud. The Bruins can just out-physical Montreal all day. I'll take Boston 4-1.

Washington (2) vs. NY Rangers (7) - Alexander Ovechkin is a great player and he has a nice supporting cast around him as well in Semin, Backstrom, and Mike Green. The Rangers will have to be as aggressive as they have been since the new coach took over to have any success, their goaltending is better too. I think the Caps will win the series in seven games.

New Jersey (3) vs. Carolina (6) - The Devils are going to win this series. Marty Brodeur is the best netminder of all-time, and New Jersey is loaded with great players. Carolina has been playing better of late, since the trade deadline. I think New Jersey will slow them down. They'll win it 4-2.

Pittsburgh (4) vs. Philadelphia (5) - The easy choice here would be to take America's team in the Pittsburgh Pens, but I'm going the other way. Pittsburgh is overrated in my opinion. That doesn't mean it wont be close...Flyers in seven.

Second Round:

Boston vs. Philadelphia - Boston can't be stopped, to much intimidation. BOS 4-1.

Washington vs. New Jersey - New Jersey has a gigantic defensive advantage and wins the series in six.

Conference Finals:

Boston vs. New Jersey - This will be a good series, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that New Jersey has enough to go to the Cup.

Western Conference:

San Jose (1) vs. Anaheim (8) - The Sharks are too good to choke this time around. Devin Setoguchi has had a great year. The Sharks have more experience in the mold than do the Ducks. Joe Thornton is a god. I like San Jose in six games.

Detroit (2) vs. Columbus (7) - Detroit is way too good in every aspect to fall to the feel-good Blue Jackets. Columbus got in this year, but the Red Wings will teach them how to win it. Detroit 4-1.

Vancouver (3) vs. St. Louis (6) - If you would have told me that St. Louis would have made the post-season this year, I would have fallen over. But, they are in there, and they have to play the Canucks who have one of the best goalies in Roberto Luongo, and some of the game's best scorers. I like Vancouver in five games.

Chicago (4) vs. Calgary (5) - Calgary is probably the most talented team in the league in my opinion, but they formed the definition of backing into the playoffs this year. Chicago owned them in the season series, it should continue. CHI 4-2.

Second Round:

San Jose vs. Chicago - San Jose has more depth than Chicago. Advantage San Jose. SJ 4-2.

Detroit vs. Vancouver - Detroit shouldn't have a problem with the inconsistent Canucks. DET 4-1.

Conference Finals:

San Jose vs. Detroit - I hate to do this to myself, but I think Detroit is too much for San Jose. This is becoming a mini-rivalry. DET 4-2.

Lord Stanley's Cup:

New Jersey v. Detroit - Detroit is going to show the world that they are the best team from the this year's bunch. Datsyuk and the boys will be good against Brodeur. Hockeytown is going to be champs. DET 4-1.

Bucks Have Their Final Game

The Milwaukee Bucks have their final tilt of the '08-'09 season this evening in Indianopolis against the Pacers.

Thank Goodness.

I'm not going to sit here and give you a breakdown on each player, but I'll try to paint a picture.

The Bucks have some talent, better yet, a lot of talent.

Michael Redd is obviously a good player, but his season was cut short because he blew his knee out. He sometimes hogs the ball a bit, but he's good enough to do that.

Richard Jefferson didn't miss a game all year, and played pretty well. Same with Charlie Villanueva, Charlie had a great year in Redd's and Bogut's absence.

Ramon Sessions is a pretty PG in the making. He's got the ability to pass the ball well and score the ball well. A lot of people think they won't be able to keep both Sessions and Villanueva, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I would have liked to see the first round pick Joe Alexander play more, but that's the way Scott Skiles does it. He did play "The Prince" Luc Mbah a Moute a ton, and he proved to be a great defender but not a scorer.

The Bucks improved from last year, but there's is still a lot of room for improvement in that organization.

Isaiah's Triumphant Return

Isaiah Thomas is getting back into to the head coaching ranks. He signed on to be the man in Miami at Florida International University, a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

He wanted to be back in coaching so bad that he is going to coach for free this year. The money from his salary will be donated back to the school's athletic department.

Isaiah accepted this position with this school because he likes a challenge. He'll have his work cut out for him, FIU was 13-20 last year and 8-12 in Sun Belt play.

Duke Basketball Player Works Out for Pack

Former Duke Men's Basketball player Greg Paulus was a football player as well back in high school in upstate New York.

He hasn't played football since graduating in 2004. He's been focused on basketball since coming to Duke.

He worked out for the Green Bay Packers on the campus of Duke last week.

I wouldn't read a whole lot into it, as far as a Packers draft consideration, but it is pretty interesting to see a college basketball player try to make it as an NFL player.

Brewers v. Cubs/Week 1 Wrap

I called for the Brewers to win 2 out of 3 games in this series, and it was right there.

If it weren't for an absolute hanger from Carlos Villanueva, the Brewers would have won Saturday night's game.

If it weren't for Reed Johnson robbing Prince Fielder of a Grand Slam in last night's game, the Brewers may have won that game as well. That Granny would have tied the game and had Miller Park rockin'.

Instead, the Brewers drop both of the games and fall to 2-4 on the young season. After watching every pitch of the series I can tell you this, the offense is struggling right now and the pitching is what we thought it would be...not very good.

Ryan Braun is now hitting .208 with 0 homers and 2 RBI. We need a lot better production from him.

Corey Hart still has the tendency to swing at the low and away sliders and curves. It's almost sickening. He's hitting .273 with two solo HRs.

Rickie Weeks has been a pleasant suprise so far this year. His defense has improved slightly. He's hitting .280 and leading the team in that department, but that's like being the smartest kid with Down's Syndrome at this point.

Everybody is striking out too much, but that's how the Brewers' hitters are. They are over-agressive at times. Prince Fielder is the king of over-agression when he comes up in a big spot like last night in the 9th.

Ken Macha's Grade: I'd prolly give Macha a C. He's still getting the hang of his players and the National League. But, selecting Suppan as the opening day starter was wrong.

I imagine that Macha and the boys can get us back on track with the Cincinnati Reds coming to town tonight.

The Showdown is Set

Possibly the game's most underrated rivalry is ready for it's first installment of the 2009 season. The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs set to tangle this weekend.

Today's game kicks off a 3 game set and it's at 3:05 in Milwaukee with Rich Harden going for the Cubs, and Braden Looper making his Brewers debut for the home opener.

It's always a blast to watch these games. But, I have to keep my emotions in check as I watch them. If you held a gun to my head and made me make a prediction, I think the Brewers will 2 of the 3.

It Could Be A Long Year...

Now, don't get me wrong here, I'm not ready to jump off the bandwagon yet, and I know Charlie isn't ready to either, but wow. Come on, ten runs? To that offense? Let's get serious.

I couldn't sit or sleep on this one. I have to say something. Naturally, I have a lovely job that occupies the majority of my time during the weekdays. This includes, but is not limited to, the hours ranging from about 2 pm until roughly 9, depending on the day. Having said that, I don't get to physically watch the games, but I do get to listen to the radio. Speaking of the radio, you can't forget to mention Bob Uecker. Ueck is back for his 39th year in the booth as the voice of the Brewers. He is now joined by newcomer Cory Provus, who did a real nice job filling in for the departed Jim Powell, who sold out and went for greener pastures down in Atlanta. Cory sounds a lot like Jim, but Jim will never be forgotten.

Anyway, I got real hot to trot right off the bat in the bottom of the 1st when Suppan gave up a three-run triple to the Jap-American Travis Ishikawa. Then, when the Crew took the lead in the top half of the 4th, I was riding high. Low and behold, what does Sup do, when he gets the lead? He squanders it. Two-run job by Aaron Rowand. Instantly, but temporarily furious after I came to my senses and remembered it was only the 4th inning.

Then we bring in "Big Red" Seth McClung, who, suprisingly, looked lost out there. He allegedly had a great spring and I expect much better out of him. That was a Guillermo Mota performance except, maybe worse. Jorge Julio, another second-rate arm brought in by The 'Stache to help "shore up" the bullpen, gives up a dinger on the first damn pitch he throws of the '09 season to Randy Winn of all the players in the league. That especially got me fired up because I just dropped Randy Winn off my fantasy team this morning, and I'm getting destroyed at this very moment.

When she was all said and done the Brewers laid an egg and got blasted 10-6.

I just vented a bit in this one, but I would like to end it on a positive note as I always do... If we can't win it's okay, as long as the Chubs lose. They did so in the bottom of the 10th, on a Jeff Keppinger broken-bat single. Hey Chicago, what do ya say?

Go Brew Crew!

NCAA Tourney/2009 Season Wrap

Congratulations to the University of North Carolina Men's Basketball team on a fine season, as they brought home the title last night in convincing fashion.

The more I think about it I should have picked UNC to win it all, but I wanted to stick with my prediction of UConn before the year got underway. I went with UConn because they had, arguably, the best big man in Hasheem Thabeet to go along with two really good forward in Jeff Adrien and Stanley Robinson. Their guards weren't too shabby either. A.J. Price and Jerome Dyson were great. When Dyson went down for the year against Syracuse, that really hurt them in the depth department.

How 'bout them Badgers? They did what no one thought they would do when they beat FSU in the tourney. FSU had all the advantages, except for coaching. I would put Bo Ryan against any of the coaches in the nation. The man is a great coach. The Wisconsin Badgers had an up and down season but somehow fought themselves into the tourney where they got a W.

The Maryland Terrapins had an inconsistent year again. They made it into the Big Dance as a 10 seed and played well against the #7 California team in the first round. In the second round, they were completely overmatched against Memphis.

The Syracuse Orange had a good year going until they hit the brunt of the murderous Big East schedule with which, they struggled. They were able to get hot at the right time and get some key victories when they needed to, including that 6 OT thriller that everyone saw in the Big East tournament against UConn. They went in as a 3 seed, but fell to Blake Griffin and Oklahoma in the Sweet 16. It'll be interesting to see what happens with what Jonny Flynn decides to do with his future.

Overall, it was another great year of College Basketball. To be honest, however, I was a little disappointed in the excitement of this year's Big Dance. There weren't many really major upsets, outside of Cleveland State showing Wake Forest the door, but even there there wasn't that much drama required. If you want to call #12 Arizona beating #5 Utah in the first round an upset, god bless ya.

Let's hope the 2010 tourney brings a whole mess of drama to unfold before us.

2009 American League Outlook

With most teams breaking camp and heading home or, in the Brewers' case, to Los Angeles for two exhibition games and eventually to Frisco to take on the Giants in the opener, I'm going to preview the American League.

AL East:

1. New York Yankees - It's so hard to pick against the Yankees to win the East. They spend a fortune on high-priced free agents in hopes of righting the ship a bit. They should be able with CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, A-Roid, and the boys. I think they should and will win the East even though I don't like them.

2. Boston Red Sox - The Red Sox have a lot there. Jason Bay is a great player. Ortiz is a clutch power hitter. Dustin Pedroia is the reigning AL MVP. Jed Lowrie is a nice looking young Shortstop. I am a big Kevin Youkilis guy, the kid can really hit it and he's solid with the leather. The pitching is good, Jon Lester is a great story and is developing into a good pitcher. Their bullpen looks great on paper. If Josh Beckett can stay healthy they'll be in better shape. I believe that Boston will easily get the Wild Card spot.

3. Tampa Bay Rays - The defending AL pennant winners have the odds against once again as they begin their defense. Evan Longoria is one of the best young player in the game today. Carl Crawford is good. They add Pat Burrell and Gabe Kapler for outfield depth. Carlos Pena won't have nearly the year he did last year, and I think some of the pitching success was a bit of a fluke. Bottom line, they don't have enough to compete the Yanks and Sox.

4. Baltimore Orioles - The O's have one of the game's best leadoff men in Brian Roberts. I think Aubrey Huff is a solid hitter. Melvin Mora can make great contact with a touch of power. The hitting will be fine, it's the pitching that worries me. All no-namers. Brian Bass? Koji Uehara? I only recognize a few names in the Orioles pitching staff. In rookie catcher Matt Wieters there is hope. He won't be in Triple-A for very long.

5. Toronto Blue Jays - I don't think the Jays have enough this year do make any noise in the AL East. Scott Rolen is done. If Vernon Wells can stay healthy for once, they might get to 80 wins, but in the AL East it's gonna take 110 wins. Alex Rios is a good player. Roy Halladay is good but he's not getting any younger. They have decent talent but there just isn't enough.

AL Central:

1. Minnesota Twins - Can't argue with pitching, and the Twins have the best staff of the AL Central. They'll have a healthy Francisco Liriano to open the year, and with the rest of the staff they have they are the clear favorite. The Twins hitting is pretty good as well. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau are great hitters. I like what Delmon Young brings too. The Twins should win a competitive AL Central.

2. Cleveland Indians - The addition of Mark DeRosa is a good one, he can play infield and outfield and can swing the bat. Grady Sizemore is one of my favorite players. The guy's a beast. The pitching is a bit more solid than the hitting for this club. Cliff Lee won't go 21-3 again and he had a tough spring, but he' still a good pitcher. They need Fausto Carmona to return to his 2007 form. Kerry Wood should solidify the closer's spot nicely.

3. Chicago White Sox - The White Sox look decent on paper but I think they aren't going to make the playoffs this year. Mark Buehrle and Jose Contreras are the best SP's on the staff, with Gavin Floyd as an honorable mention. The bullpen could be a bit shaky. Octavio Dotel and Scott Linebrink are a little inconsistent, but Bobby Jenks is the man. As for the offense, it's in good shape. Paul Konerko and Jim Thome can hit the long ball, and Carlos Quentin is an emerging star.

4. Detroit Tigers - Too many question marks for a team with the payroll that the Tigers have. Three of the best pitchers on the club (Dontrelle Willis, Jeremy Bonderman, and Joel Zumaya) are currently on the shelf. Brandon Lyon is making the transition to an AL closer this year. The offense is as potent as they come. Miguel Cabrera and Magglio Ordonez are obviously great, and Placido Polanco is, arguably, the best contact hitter in the league. Curtis Granderson is a heck of a lead-off man. I'd like to think the Tigers will be great, but it's too hard to think that.

5. Kansas City Royals - Crappy team, with an old stadium. It's tough to see the Royals making any progress. The only guy worth mentioning on the pitching staff is closer Joakim Soria. Alex Gordon is ready to breakout though, I believe. He hit 6 homers and batted .338 this spring. Other than that, there isn't much there.

AL West:

1. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - Whatever they're called these days, they still have the best team in divsion. The pitching is definitely solid. However, John Lackey, Ervin Santana, and Kelvim Escobar are all currently on the DL, but when they come back they'll be fine. They're pen doesn't strike me as unhittable especially after the loss of K-Rod, but Jose Arredondo is gonna be good. The offense is really good. Chone Figgins is one of the best lead-off hitters in the game. Torii Hunter and Vlad can bring the lumber. They weren't able to keep Teixeira, that would have helped but they should still have enough to get into the playoffs.

2. Oakland Athletics - The A's have a revamped lineup heading into 2009. Matt Holliday is an obvious stud. Jason Giambi is a "hella good" power hitter (yeah, I'll use some Oakland lingo). They add Nomar Garciaparra who is versatile. Orlando Cabrera is a large upgrade over Bobby Crosby. The pitching is underrated, especially in Chuck's eyes. They have solid pitching, Justin Duchsherer, Dana Eveland, and they have what scouts are calling "the best group of three young pitchers" in lefty Brett Anderson, and righties Vin Mazzaro and Trevor Cahill. Joey Devine is an up and coming closer. I think they'll be good this year, and when they're in contention they won't trade Matt Holliday.

3. Seattle Mariners - The pitching here is phenomenal. King Felix is the man. Erik Bedard should be good. The rotation is very good. The bullpen has a couple more question marks but they'll be solid. The hitting is always going to be good with Ichiro at the top getting on base, unfortunately he's starting the year on the DL with a bleeding ulcer. The return of Griffey makes everything right in the world again. They also added former Brewer Russell Branyan and 1B/DH Mike Sweeney. Adrian Beltre is good. What happened to Richie Sexson?

4. Texas Rangers - They just don't have what it takes to compete in the AL West. Josh Hamilton can only take them so far. Michael Young is none too happy about moving to 3B to make room for Elvis Andrus. They picked up Andruw Jones, but who knows with him? He's lost a step. They don't have a great deal of pitching either, Padilla and Millwood are the best starters and Joaquin Benoit and Eddie Guardado are the only guys I've heard of in the bullpen.

Milwaukee Brewers Update

As we near the start of the 2009 MLB season (which opens up with the defending World Series champ Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night) I'd like to breakdown what's goin' on with the Crew.

-Trot Nixon was released. I wish I could have seen what Trot could go in a pinch hitting role. I bet he could have been good at that, but I'll never find out what he can do as a Brewer.

-Basically all of the prospects got sent to Triple-A. Mat Gamel, Alcides Escobar, Angel Salome. These guys are sure to make an appearance sometime this year. The book is not yet out on Casey McGehee and Brad Nelson.

-3B Mike Lamb decided to opt for free agency than go to Triple-A. Why wouldn't he? To be honest, I'm a little upset. I thought Lamb was a heck of a hitter for us last year. He'll prolly catch on somewhere else.

-Manager Ken Macha has made it almost official that Jeff Suppan will start opening day. I don't really understand why he is so against having Yovani take on the "pressure" of being an opening day starter. He'll be the ace probably after the All-Star break.

-The Crew is getting bit hard by the damn injury bug. Ryan Braun is always tweaking something. New pitchers Braden Looper and Trevor Hoffman probably won't be making appearance on opening day. The Do-it-all Craig Counsell has a bum knee. Let's hope these don't become major issues.

Another note, let's welcome Michael Fant to the blogging world shall we? He's a smart man when it comes to sports, other than the fact that he's a Chubs fan.

John Calipari To Join Kentucky

Former Memphis coach John Calipari has reportedly moved on to coach at the University of Kentucky.

This move suprises me a little because he has all the convenience in the world at Memphis. He can call the shots, he can bring in all the best recruits, etcetra, etcetra. Now all that is gone, he is going to a program that is demands much more than a Conference USA title every year. Just ask Billy Gillispie about that.

At Kentucky, you have to win a National Championship every third year or your as good as gone.

What does this mean for Memphis? I think it means they are going to lose their highly touted recruits and become a little bit worse but still should have no problem taking care of the rest of Conference USA. As long as Tyreke Evans stays aboard they can be real good.

What does this mean for Kentucky? I think this means that they are serious about getting back to being a title contender by "bringing the G-squad to Lexington" as Mike Fant puts it. Calipari has no problem reeling those guys in. But in all honesty, I think that Calipari should be what UK needs to get back to the top.

Final Four This Weekend

The Final Four is finally among us. I'm excited.

How does your bracket look?

I can honestly say that I had Michigan State in the Final Four. The only team I am missing is Villanova, I had Pitt. Needless to say, Pitt's showing was less than stellar in the tournament this year.

As you know, I have UConn winning it all and I'm terrified right now. They have to play the home team in Michigan State. One thing I need to pay attention to when filling out my bracket is the location of games. I need UConn to take MSU out and win the National Championship, because I am currently in first in our pool and the money is looking pretty good right now.
I think UConn can and will win it all ultimately. Good balance, great rebounding, and guys that can shoot the 3. Everybody pray for UConn.

Hoffman Goes On Shelf

The Brewers newly acquired closer Trevor Hoffman will begin the '09 campaign on the DL. This isn't good news for the Crew.

Hoffman tweaked his side while pitching an inning back on March 13, and hasn't pitched a whole lot over the past three weeks.

It'll be interesting to see who will get the nod as the closer to start the year, I've heard Carlos Villanueva might get a look. Personally, I think that McClung has the stuff to be a closer.

Let's hope that this isn't a season-long lingering injury, so we can have a shot at another postseason run.

Sweet 16 Picks

Here's my "expert" opinion on what will happen in tonight's and tomorrow night's games:

UConn v. Purdue

First, we have UConn taking on Purdue. I have to ride UConn. I picked them to win it all, and I did so before the season so I can't go against that now. Connecticut has the height advantage is this one, as they do in most games. Having said that, I think Purdue is a heck of a team. I think they have some great players like Hummel and JaJuan Johnson. Hasheem Thabeet and the boys should get in done out in Glendale.

Pitt v. Xavier

Next is Pitt against Xavier at 6:27 pm Central Time, to be exact. I actually had Pitt taking on FSU in this one but, unfortunately, Wisconsin shattered that dream early. As long as DeJuan Blair stays healthy and out of foul trouble, I can see them rolling into the Elite Eight.

Missouri v. Memphis

Approxiamately 30 minutes after the end of the UConn and Purdue game, there's more madness in Glendale. Missou will take their crack at "Calipari's Convicts." There's a lot to like about Missouri, they're deep. They had 10 guys that played 1o minutes a game over the course of the season. That bodes well for them against Memphis. DeMarre Carroll and Leo Lyons are very good players. In the end, I think Memphis' overall experience will be the key in them advancing. Tyreke Evans is a developing into a good point guard.

Villanova v. Duke

Oops, I had VCU v. Texas in this one on my bracket. Please forgive me for the VCU pick, I will never forgive myself for it. Texas should have beaten Duke and that's a fact. Anyway, I have to pick 'Nova in this one. I told myself when during the selection show that Duke won't make it past the Sweet 16. Sorry Sethy, Duke exits now. 'Nova in the Elite Eight. Donte Cunningham and Scottie Reynolds are studs. Duke relies too much on the three pointer.

Well, I've been lacking a bit in writing blogs so I decided to do another video blog. Excuse the part in the middle where I put on the music. It's critical to the blog.

2009 Big Dance: Most Intriguing Matchups

Well kids, the greatest time of year is upon us. It's tourney time.

I just wanna touch on the matchups that intrigue me most about this year's installment. Not necessarily in just the first round, but that's where I'll start:

Midwest - (8) Ohio State v. (9) Siena- Siena has Cinderella written all over them. They have a pretty solid program and they're always in the tourney. They return all five starters from last year's team that upset Villanova in the first round. Ohio State has the #1 from this year in B.J. Mullens and Evan Turner is a nice lookin' player. I have Siena pulling this one out.

West - (4) Washington v. (13) Mississippi St.- Washington is the best team coming out of the Pac-10. They have on heck of a post-presence in Jon Brockman, and some real good guard play. Mississippi St. has the best shot blocker in the nation in Jarvis Varnado. I think UW has the experience over Mississippi St. and better guards. I took Washington here.

East - (5) Florida State v. (12) Wisconsin - FSU has had a magical year, they took out UNC in the semi-finals of the ACC tourney and they were ranked in the Top 25 all year. They have the ACC defensive player of the year in Toney Douglas and he's a floor general. Wisconsin can lull teams to sleep with their style of offense but they are a decent team. Jon Leuer had a good season. I have to say sorry to my fellow 'Sconnies, I have FSU going to the Sweet 16.

South - (6) Arizona State v. (11) Temple - This is a matchup of individual stars. ASU's James Harden and Temple's Dionte Christmas. Temple won the A-10 tournament, but ASU couldn't hold off USC in the Pac-10 championship, but they get in for the first time since 2003. I have Temple winning it though, Dionte Christmas is a stud.

Possible future matchups:

(1)Louisville v. (4) Wake Forest - Truthfully, I was shocked that Wake got a 4. I thought they were deserving of a 3, but I'm not on the committee. Louisville plays good defense and Wake is great offensively. Al-Farouq Aminu is a diaper dandy and he could be up against another diaper dandy in Samardo Samuels.

(1) North Carolina v. (2) Oklahoma - Do I need to say more than Tyler Hansbrough v. Blake Griffin? You have the goofiest, yet most hard-working player in Hansbrough and you have the most talented player in Blake Griffin. It would be fun to watch.

The Dutch Shock The World

The team from the Netherlands in this year's WBC wasn't expected to make any noise.

Well they now have done the impossible.

They upset the heavily favored and much better team from the Dominican Republic. The DR is loaded with perennial all-stars and the Dutch's ace was Sidney Ponson, and their only notable hitter is Randall Simon. They upset them twice in the last week.

The DR just wasn't able to figure out the Bert Blyleven coached pitching staff of the Netherlands. They only managed to muster 3 runs total in their two matchups.

Gene Kingsale was the man of the night. He drove in the tying run in the bottom of the 11th, and scored the game-winning run on the Willy Aybar error at first base. Kingsale went 2 for 4 for the game.

The Dutch were celebrating like they won a World Series.

However, the Dominicans, led by Felipe Alou, were visibly shaken. They were expected to win and that's what they came to do. An All-Star laden lineup that included Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, Carlos Marmol, David Ortiz, and an injured Alex Rodriguez. Just couldn't crack the Dutch pitching and get anything done offensively, even with the names mentioned above.

Up next for the Dutch are the Puerto Ricans who are 2-0 in WBC play, and are also loaded with big-time big league talent. That is obviously no obstacle for the Dutch.

Another Raiders Offseason Update

- Javon Walker took a pay cut that freed up 8 million. This was just about his only choice. It was pay cut or be cut. Javon hasn't done a whole lot since he left Green Bay. Let's see if he can turn it around next year.

-In the wake of the Dallas Cowgirls' release of headcase WR Terrell Owens (causing a media frenzy), team exec./badass John Herrera, when asked of where Oakland stands as far as picking him up, "We're as happy as can be right now." Whatever that means. I'll be in a coma for many weeks if Al doops that low.

-There are rumors that the team is close to a deal with free agents OT Khalif Barnes from Jacksonville. I would be pumped if they got him. He's had four years of starting experience and he's only 26 years old. Please Al, don't let him go back home without a deal.

- Former C Jake Grove has dashed for Miami. Here's my take... good. Don't let the door hit ya on the ass on the way out Jake. This leave us some space to take a diaper dandy of a center with our second round pick (*Max Unger*).

-Speaking of the offensive line, the Raiders resigned RG Cooper Carlisle to a five-year deal. He was probably the most consistent on the line (beside Robert Gallery) last year, which isn't saying too much. Still speaking of the offensive line, LG/badass Robert Gallery restructured his contract and extended it. Gallery has been a force since he was moved to LG.

-RB Justin Fargas restructured his contract as well. This is good but he shouldn't expect to be the #1 RB come Week 1. It's time for Bush and McFadden to take the reigns. Louis Rankin could get a shot as the 3rd back.

-Last but most certainly not least, the Raiders are mourning the loss of a teammate. LB Marquis Cooper, as you all know, was part of the boat that was lost at sea in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida. The search was called off on Tuesday at dusk. They only managed to find the one guy. He allegedly had a body temp. of 89 degrees, but he is expected to be fine. Let's hold out hope that Marquis and the others return. Unfortunately, at this point it looks really bleek.

Marbury Suits Up for C's

How long has it been since Stephon Marbury played in a game?

13 months to be exact, but it was a rhetorical question.

That's a really long gap. Unless your name is Gilbert Arenas. Gilbert hasn't played in probably two seasons. Arenas has a legitimate excuse however. He is actually injured. Starbury was just being a punk.

After all the hoopla of the Boston Celtics signed the man who was an outcast in New York, He suited up in Celtics green and white. Unfortunately for him, he was wearing #8. I say unfortunately because he has his trademark #3 tattooed on the side of his head.

Marbury played just under 13 minutes Friday night against a banged-up Indiana Pacers squad. Stars Danny Granger and Mike Dunleavy were both on the shelf. Starbury had 8 points to go with 2 assists. The Celtics won 104-99 in front of the home crowd, that was welcoming toward Marbury. Welcome back to the show #8.

On a side note, the Celtics also picked up F/C Mikki Moore off of waivers from the Sacramento Kings.

The Shark Gets "Sensitive"

Greg Norman or "The Shark," for those of you who like to call him that, came out and made some interesting comments about pro golfers possibly being awarded too much money, given the status on the economy in America.

He suggests that the cash payouts in the PGA Tour should be lowered in sensitivity to the economic climate.

Norman is a man who is worth plenty of money and shouldn't worry about what the economy has to do with the PGA Tour. Obviously, I feel like certain pro athletes may take for granted the kind of life they have. But, most of them work hard. I mean, who am I to say that Tiger Woods doesn't deserve every penny he makes. Tiger is the best golfer of all time. All I am saying is, what about the guy who is typically at or near the bottom of all the tournaments he enters and needs every cent he gets to feed his family. Should he get a pay cut? I hardly think so.

Brewers Set to Embark on '09

The Milwaukee Brewers have their inaugural Cactus League spring training contest of '09, tomorrow against Matt Holliday and the new-look Oakland A's. I couldn't be more excited!

As most see it, it is a useless game to begin spring training. I see it as the first Brewers game for the season. I think these games do show a little bit of what the team might look like for the regular season. If you lose a bunch of spring training games, you might have some work to do. It's not like the NFL where the team that leaves their first stringers in longest win. In MLB, the starters play most of the game in order to get that repitition they need.

Here's what they will look like if the regular season was beginning tomorrow, in my opinion:
1. Rickie Weeks (2B)- I think Rickie will have a good year. Not exactly Jeff Kent in his prime, but a good year nonetheless. He needs to step up and prove himself, or we need to part ways with him.

2. J.J. Hardy (SS)- J.J. actually had a pretty good season offensively for a Shortstop. He will have to continue to do that for us. Typically, he gets off to a hot start in April and May, then disappears later in the year. We need him to remain consistent throughout the season or he could find himself down in the lineup.

3. Ryan Braun (LF)- The "Hebrew Hammer" as he is so affectionately called in these parts is probably the best overall player on the Brewers. He hits for average and power. He didn't commit a single error in LF last season, his first of the like in his career or life. I don't think there is anyway Braun should fall out of the three spot in the lineup.

4. Prince Fielder (1B)- An allegedly slim and trim Prince (according to Charlie) enters camp after signing a new 2-year deal worth $18 million. He has been ridiculed a lot lately, mainly for not having as a good of a year last year, as he did the year before. Prince still had a fairly solid year statistically and he was hot down the stretch, just about the only one too. Prince "has the range of a truck with no gas in it" over at first, but he has the bat to hit cleanup.

5. Corey Hart (RF)- I've said it before, but Corey really let me down in September last year. He looked like a 12 year old out there. He was flailing at the down and away slider and striking out all the time. It sucked because he has been the most consistent over the last few seasons and teams found a flaw in Corey's swing. In the field, he is one of the better. He has a great arm and is the fastest guy on the team.

6. Bill Hall/Mike Lamb (3B)- I can't see Billy Hall being the full-time man at the hot corner. He wouldn't be able to hit the ball off of the tee if it were right-handed, and he has gotten hurt already this spring before he even had to report. He must have gotten off the couch and strained his groin. Mike Lamb made his push to become a Brewer for a while, down the stretch last year. He was one of the few that could hit. I'm gonna have to say that Billy is probably better defensively, but there will still be a platoon to start '09. Both of them need to keep Mat Gamel in the backs of their heads.

7. Mike Cameron (CF)- Cameron seemed to have a knack of costing us more games last year than maintaining games with his glove. Yet, I can't deny that he is one of the better center-fielder's in the game. He has the hardware to prove it. As for the hitting, well, he could be better. I think he was hot for one four-game stretch last year, and it came around Memorial Day if I remember right. Help me out on that one.

8. Jason Kendall (C)- I think Kendall had a pretty big impact on the pitching this past year. He didn't have a big impact on much else. He wasn't worth a you know what hitting, and he wouldn't let Mike Rivera get a chance. Rivera can hit better and play solid defense, but Kendall's the man.

Bench:
Craig Counsell (IF)- I can't see any reason why he wouldn't be on the 25-man roster. He was there last year and is a pretty solid player in my opinion. If someone in the infield should go down, Alcides Escobar is on speed dial.

Mike Rivera (C)- The aforementioned Mike Rivera is probably the best hitting catcher the Brewers have had in my lifespan. He could easily succeed in place of Jason Kendall. Look for Angel Salome to come up from the minors in case of injury.

Tony Gwynn Jr. (OF)- Many people believe that he should be the starter, and for good reason. He can make good contact and he can run with the best of 'em. He plays well in the field as well.

Scott Thorman (1B/OF)- The Crew picked Thorman up as a harmless signing. However, Thorman has some pop in his bat and could become a decent backup, if he makes the team. This spot could be filled by Brad Nelson or Mat Gamel when she's all said and done.

The Starting Rotation has come to look like this if the season began tomorrow:

1. Dave Bush- Macha has already come out and said that Yovani Gallardo won't be his opening day starter. He "doesn't want to put that kind of pressure on a kid who isn't even 23 years old" even though Jason Kendall thinks he can win a Cy Young some day. Enough about Gallardo. Dave Bush was the best pitcher, not named CC Sabathia, down the stretch last year. For now, he's my best guess at the Opening Day starter. It could be anyone at this point though.

2. Yovani Gallardo- Yovani has much potential as any other pitcher in the league. He has struggled through injuries a little in his young career. When healthy, he is very dominant. I've already forgotten that CC was even in Milwaukee because of Yovani. He will assume the ace role by the All-Star break.

3. Manny Parra- After the start that Parra had last year, I thought he would win 2o games. Low and behold, he came to a screeching halt in the middle of last year. He ended up winning only 10 after starting 9-2. I think Manny can turn it around. I'm sure he feels that he has something to prove. Not to mention he is the only lefty in the rotation. Plus, he can swing the bat.

4. Jeff Suppan- I like Jeff Suppan. I'm normally reluctant to admit that because of the monthly outing where he gets absolutely shelled. Overall, he's a solid veteran pitcher. He's not anymore than a 3 or 4 starter on any club (unless it's the Royals or Nationals). Sup's good for 12-15 wins this year.

5. Braden Looper- I like the Braden Looper addition. Doug Melvin had to get somebody to fill the void, and he did so late in the free agency period. Looper can provide us a good arm to shore up the rear end of our rotation. He could possibly climb up the rotation as the season goes on.

Here's what the 'pen should look like:

Carlos Villanueva- Villy is a good pitcher no matter where we have him. Starter or bullpen he's is reliable, and I love the kid. He'll hopefully be in the 'pen for the year but, if need be, he can step in the rotation.

Seth McClung- Seth "Big Red" McClung is one of my personal favorites among the Brewers. He can really bring it, and he can be a reliable reliever in '09. Same goes for him along with Villy, he could step in the rotation for some spot starts.

Mitch Stetter- Stetter has had some control issues, but he's pretty good. He should be the Lefty specialist for the '09 campaign, a title held by Mr. Brian Shouse for the past few years. Stetter may have some big shoes to fill there. I'd like to see what happens with him.

Jorge Julio- A new acquisition this year for the Brewers. He has some experience has a Major League closer, but Hoffman will have that duty. Look for Jorge to hold down middle relief this year.

Todd Coffey- The Brewers re-signed Coffey right out of the gate this offseason. They must really like him. I don't think he's too bad, let's hope he's better than that. We're gonna need him to be consistent.

Eric Gagne- Gag me is going to be in the 'pen this season, it's inevitable. Most likely as the set-up man. They re-signed him to a minor league deal, so I'm alright with it, for now. Let's face it, could it have gotten worse than Guillotine Guillermo Mota?

Trevor Hoffman- The savior to a weak bullpen right? Part of me says yes. He's proven that he can do it for a long time in this steroid ridden era, but he's not getting any younger and he's lost a bit on his fastball. However, it is his changeup, not his fastball that got him where he is today.

The Brewers have high expectations for themselves going into this season. I do too. I think they can be a contender once again. They will be able to put a ton of runs on the board. They return everyone in their lineup from a year ago. The loss of CC will hurt of course, but they should have enough. For Ben Sheets, see ya later little fella. Nice career. Melvin and the boys brought in Ken Macha to manage the team, and he's a winner.

The Cubs can add all the free agents money can buy, but remember this... The Brewers have won more games over the last four years than the Chubs, including more playoff victories. 1-0.

Finally, my call on how many games the Milwaukee Brewers will win in '09. Oh boy, I'm gonna say 85. With a wild card repeat. This is pretty bold, but that's how I am. I'm gonna take the easy road and say the Fubs will win the Central again. They have so much compared to everyone else.

Offseason Gets Off To a REALLY Good Start

The Raiders have done something that no one expected them to do.

They have had the offseason get off on the right foot for once.

It all started when they re-signed CB Chris Johnson (the better Chris Johnson) to a four-year deal last week. Then they were able to retain P Shane Lechler, one of the better punter's of all time, and he got what he earned. A record deal for a punter. He got a 3 year $12 million deal. And now today the Raiders locked up Pro Bowl Corner Nnamdi Asomugha to a 3 year- $45.3 million deal, another hefty contract for a guy who is currently the best at his position, in my opinion.

Other Offseason notes:

QB JaMarcus Russell and RB Darren McFadden both underwent successful minor operations. JaMarcus' was for some bone chips in his ankle. D-Dawg's was for a minor shoulder operation.

The team cut ties with WR Ronald Curry after several years of being with the Raiders. This with free up some cap room to go after other potential WR options. Speaking of other options, there is the possibility of Jerry Porter coming back to re-join the team that drafted him. I say, no way, Jose. He's a head case.

The Raiders claimed former Buccaneers QB Bruce Gradkowski off waivers. Presumably to be a backup to JaMarcus, I like this move.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Javon Walker. He didn't do a single thing last year and he has quite a bit to prove and to live up to.

Bucks All-Star Break Update

The Bucks go into the All-Star break with a 26-29 record. Not too bad, considering they won 26 games all of last season and they've been playing a lot of games without their entire normal starting five. Redd's out for the year. Ridnour is going to miss a month. And Bogut is out for 2 months with a bad back.

The Bucks are only three games behind Detroit for second place in the Central division, obviously I doubt that they can catch Cleveland.

Charlie V has really done a nice job since Scotty Skiles inserted him into the starting lineup. In the last 13 games, Charlie is averaging 22.9 ppg and 8.1 rebounds a game. That's pretty nice. Ramon Sessions has stepped in and stepped up. He had a 44 point performance last Saturday in an OT loss to Detroit. He had 15 points and 17 assists on Wednesday against Indiana, a winning effort.

There have been talks of the Bucks making a trade, a big trade to shakeup the team. It is probably going to involve the aforementioned guys. Sessions and Villanueva are both going to be restricted free agents after the season and the Bucks can't afford to keep both of them. Let's just hope that John Hammond can get something good in return. He did acquire Keith Bogans from the Orland Magic in exchange for Tyronn Lue. This was a good trade. The Magic get some needed depth at PG after the Jameer Nelson injury and the Bucks get someone to fill the Michael Redd void. Bogans is a good defender and he can shoot a little.

I think the Bucks are going to be in good shape in the second half. They have three division games right off the bat. If they can go to Detroit and win, that would be huge. I look for the Bucks to get into the playoffs. I know, that's a far cry from what I thought they would do, but Skiles has them playing D and that is what has gotten them here.

Crew Signs Looper; Bolsters Pitching Staff

It's being reported that the Milwaukee Brewers have signed veteran right-handed pitcher Braden Looper.

Looper has spent the last two seasons with division rival St. Louis, in their starting rotation. This is a pretty important move for the Brewers who looked like they were going to have a few questions about their rotation going into next season.

This signing could mean that McClung and/or Carlos Villanueva can stay in the bullpen, and provide us some consistency there.

Here's what our rotation could look like now:

1. Yovani Gallardo

2. Manny Parra

3. Braden Looper

4. Dave Bush

5. Jeff Suppan

I like the look of that rotation. The only thing I have against it is that there could be another lefty in there. After the Hoffman signing, and having Villa and Big Red in the 'pen we can have a decent group of relievers.

Duke v. UNC: The Rivalry

UNC is set to travel 8 miles up the road to Durham, NC and clash with the Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor, a historically nasty place to play from the standpoint of opposing teams.

This is typically the best game of the College Basketball regular season. Both of the teams are almost always ranked amongst the top 10 teams in the nation. Duke is still probably recovering from their 74-47 blowout loss at Clemson last Wednesday. UNC is on fire once again after losing their first two ACC games. This is the best rivalry in college sports, in my opinion.

That being said, I need to make a call on the game itself. I think I'm gonna have to go with Duke. I think Duke as the home-court advantage and a stifling defense. Duke still might need 70 to win this one. Duke 76-71.

I Have To Say Something

I just have to make a few quick comments about this.

Miami has to be the worst sports city in the United States of America. Miami gets the privelege of having a team representing them in all four major sports. In MLB, there are the Florida Marlins. In the NFL, there are the Miami Dolphins. In the NHL, there are the Florida Panthers. And in the NBA, there is the Miami Heat.

Outside of the Miami Dolphins, these teams weren't terribly great over the past year. Even then, the Dolphins were coming off of a 1-15 season no more than a year ago. I am not talking about the teams themselves, but the fans. I leave their loyalty to Miami sports in serious question. I guess I can understand that there are other things to do in that particular part of the country, like hit the beach and work on your tan but my gosh...

I sit there and watch the Marlins when the Brewers are in town, it sounds like a freakin' minor league game. You can almost hear player chatter because there are 34 Cuban immigrants in the stands. The Marlins aren't that far removed from a World Series title, actually they've won two in their 15 year existence. Compare that to Milwaukee, which I consider to be a good sports city, the Brewers hadn't even had a winning season from 1992 to 2007 and they were selling the place out in mid-summer. They couldn't give away tickets to a Marlins game.

Then you have the Florida Panthers, and let's be honest, the NHL has been a sinking ship in America for a while. Especially since the lockout year, when they cancelled the entire season. I like how Miami, FL gets a professional hockey team and nowhere in Wisconsin is there a pro hockey team. Miami is probably the last city in the U.S. to call home to a pro hockey team, and since they aren't the best in their sport, they aren't going to have any attendance in return.

Last and certainly least, I present the Miami Heat. The Heat have one good year with Shaq and D-Wade and the place looks like how it looks in Cleveland with LeBron. The Heat went on to win an NBA Finals title. That was only like 3 years ago, but some things never cease to amaze. All it takes in Miami is one subpar season and you've lost all your fans. Granted, the Heat were the dogshit team of the decade last year, but that's beside the point.

I hope that it is clear that I feel very strongly here. Miami gets championships left, right, and center, and they don't show any love to their teams. Here in Wisconsin, we haven't even smelled a championship since 1997 when the Pack brought home the Lombardi Trophy.

I strongly believe that Miami is a garbage sports city.

Cable's The Guy

It is being reported that Undead Al has "officially" decided on removing the "interim" tag from in front of Tom Cable's name. Making him the head coach of the Oakland Raiders for the 2009 season.

I am pretty happy with this decision. As I have said before, he brings continuity to the team. Many of players have come out and said that they wanted Cable back, including JaMarcus Russell. Cable may have made a couple of bone-headed play calls, most notably, at home against KC when he decided to pull out the ole' fake field goal, and KC ended up getting six points for themselves out of it.

The reason he was probably the right man is that he actually wanted the Raiders job. That's a project in itself. It's a known fact that, for Cable, the Raiders are his dream job.
There are also reports that Al has also decided upon his coordinators as well. Ted Tollner, the recently fired 49ers QB's coach, who has experience as an O coordinator, and is old as dirt. John Marshall is allegedly the guy for the vacant D coordinator spot. He has been the Seahawks defensive coordinator for the past three years. I like this one, but I'm not sure about the Tollner pick. We'll just have wait and see I guess.
At least we have our coach finally. Now we can shift out focus and attention to re-signing Lechler and Asomugha. We need both of them.

Super Bowl is Finally Here

After the long drawn-out wait, we finally have this glorious day in American culture. Super Bowl Sunday.

Today we have the opportunity to watch what is going to be a very entertaining game, and what are going to be very entertaining commercials. I can't wait for the new E-Trade baby commercials, they are going to be a hoot.

As far as the game is concerned, it's going to be a battle between the high-octane Arizona Cardinals offense featuring, arguably, the best WR in the game in Larry Fitzgerald. They will be trying to get some yardage against, arguably, one of the best defenses in NFL history in the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I've been going against the Cardinals for the duration of this great playoff run. Who would have thunk that they would be here, not me. Having said that, I am going to continue to go against the Arizona Cardinals. I think Pittsburgh has their great defense, but they have a pretty potent offense themselves. I think this one might come down to the wire, and it had better after all this anticipation. Pittsburgh wins Super Bowl XLIII 27-24.

Maryland @ #2 Duke

The Maryland Terrapins travel to Cameron Indoor to face the #2 Duke Blue Devils today at 12 ET.

Duke is on a roll right now with Gerald Henderson playing as good as anyone in the country right now. Kyle Singler is no slouch either. Henderson is probably the most athletic player in the nation, especially considering his 6'4" frame.

Today is a good opportunity for Maryland to shock the world and go to Durham and upset a good team on the road. This could be just like they did last year around this time, going to Chapel Hill and taking down the #1 team in all the land, UNC.

They're going to need Greivis Vasquez to step up and be the great leader that he is. If Vasquez struggles it could be a long day. He has a tendency to shoot too much when he's not having a good day. This usually isn't a good formula for Maryland.

Now prediction time. I think that Maryland has good chance to win today, as Gary Williams will have the kids ready to go for this one. It is so hard to go against Duke though, but they should be on alert today. Dukies win 69-60.

Bucks Get 32 From Charlie V

The Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Dallas Mavericks at the Bradley Center Wednesday night. Actually they destroyed the Mavs 133-99. The Bucks held the Mavericks to only 36% shooting.

Charlie Villanueva had 32 points and 10 boards as a starter for the suprising yet, inconsistent Bucks. Michael Redd got his typical 27 points, while Richard "RJ" Jefferson had 15. Each RJ and Redd had 7 rebounds.

The Bucks were playing in there fifth consecutive game without 7' foot Center Andrew Bogut.

The Bucks have been playing better defense this year and that has led to their 21-24 start. That's better than I thought they would be at this point in the year. However, they have been highly inconsistent this season. How can you go to San Antonio and win one and then lose to the Bobcats and Clippers?

There are numerous rumors of the Bucks trading someone. I just hope that it isn't Michael Redd. He is a decent leader and a great basketball player. I'd hate to see the Bucks trade the face of the franchise.

The Sharks Get a Big One

Amidst all the non-sense about the Sharks having a potential collapse, the Detroit Red Wings came to town Saturday night.

This was a great opportunity for the Sharks to show the League that they are still the best team in the NHL.

They did just that. The Sharks beat the Red Wings 6-5 on Saturday. They got four assists from winger Ryan Clowe. A game-winning goal and two assists from Milan Michalek. Even Wisconsin native Joe Pavelski got into the act with one goal on seven shots.

This was a big victory for San Jose, as they went three points up on Detroit for 1st place in the Western Conference, and bolstering the confidence of the team.

I am looking forward to the February 1oth matchup between San Jose v. Boston, who are #1 in the East currently. That one will be on Versus Network at 6 p.m.

Tony Dungy to Step Down as Coach

It was made official Monday morning. Amongst all the speculation, Tony Dungy will indeed be stepping down as head man of the Indianapolis Colts.

This is a little bit of a sad day for the NFL, as one of the true class acts of my lifetime will no longer be a coach in the NFL, for the time being. He has come out and stated that he wants to do community work with young men in the Indianapolis area. That's great Mr. Dungy, good for you. He has wanted to do this for the last two seasons, since winning the Super Bowl of the 2006 season. I guess, now is the time for it. I wouldn't be suprised if he came back in a few years, but now he feels it's the right thing to do.

Associate HC Jim Caldwell will take over the team. This is common knowledge because he was confirmed to be the "head coach in waiting" before last season.

Trouble in Beantown?

The Boston Celtics dropped another game again last night.

They have lost now seven of nine since starting out with a league best 27-2 record. At least they lost to, probably, the best team in the East. LeBron and the Cavaliers.

LeBron had 38 points and played stifling defense on Paul Pierce. As I look at this game, there was very little bench production. Daniel Gibson had 10 off the bench for Cleveland, Eddie House had 8 off the bench for the C's.

I was hearing the players of the Celtics talk about how they"need to get their defensive swagger back." I think that statement is false. They need to get their offensive swagger back. Since their Christmas Day loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Celtics haven't scored more than 90 points in any of their losses in regulation.

That has to change in order for Boston to regain its dominance. Until then, I'll be laughing about them losing so much.

Brewers Ink Veteran Closer Trevor Hoffman

Hallelujah! Doug Melvin is alive!

As we welcome Dougy Melvin back from his mausoleum, he picked up a new closer. On the outside, this is eerily similar to the Gag me signing last year.

But it's really not.

Trevor Hoffman can still pitch. He started off shaky last year, but finished strong. Sort of like CC Sabathia, but to a lesser extent. I am really excited to see how he will perform in a Brewers uniform. I think he's still got for at least another year.

If Hoffman can stay healthy the Brewers actually have a legit closer for the year. Possibly, giving them what they need to anchor the bullpen and mentor some of the younger guys in the pen.

Cubs Pick Up Milton Bradley

In theory, this is a decent pick up for the Fubs.

You look at the exterior traits that Milty brings to the table: switch hitter, can hit for power and average, and he can run a little yet.

But unfortunately for the Northsiders, it's not going to be the exterior traits that will have the most impact. It will be his undeniable ability to continue to be a headcase. If he's not blowing out his knee running the bases, he's spraying baseballs all over the field as part of his fit he has to throw after he messes up himself.

I am actually kind of happy that that team in Chicago brought him in. He's baseball's version of Ron Artest. I think it is only a matter of time before he goes, into the stands, after one of those obnoxious and licked up Chicago Cubs fans who are chirping the whole game.

2008 BCS National Championship

It's set folks. Everyone is ready to go for tomorrow night as the #1 Oklahoma Sooners are set to take on the #2 Florida Gators in the BCS National Championship game.

What a game this should be.

We've got the best QB in the nation going up against a very stout defense. We've the MLB for a QB in Timmy Tebow going up against a defense that has something to prove, that they can be a good defense. What better stage than this? I think that Oklahoma will win this game. I absolutely love Sam Bradford, the kid is awesome. Timmy Tebow, not so much. I can't really deny that he is good in college, but he isn't a true QB. You hardly see him in a highlight making a good throw for a TD, it's always a run or the one I love most, the jump pass.

This is going to be a great showdown. One for the ages folks. I like Oklahoma to pull it out. 35-30.

Brewers Off-Season Update

So far this off-season, it's been a struggle for us Milwaukee Brewer fans.

CC left us for the big bank, Big Ben probably won't be coming back, and the Crew hasn't really done anything major to compensate that.

Now it would be easy to say the Brewers are going to be a weak team this coming season, so I'm not going to say that directly but that might be what I mean.

The Brewers starting rotation, as of now, might look like this:

Yovani Gallardo- I have to believe he'll be the Opening Day starter.

Manny Parra- Let us down at the end of the year, but still should be a solid starter.

Dave Bush- I thought he looked good in his playoff start.

Jeff Suppan- He is what he is.

???- A lot of possibilities: Chris Capuano? Carlos Villanueva? Seth McClung? Free Agent?

The Brewers Lineup could look like this:

1. 2B Rickie Weeks- I think Rickie could breakout this year. Not a .300 batting ave. though.

2. SS J.J. Hardy- Would be a great no. 2 hitter in front of the boppers

3. LF Ryan Braun- Best player on the freakin' team

4. 1B Prince Fielder- Didn't seem like it, but Prince still had a decent year.

5. RF Corey Hart- Really let down in Sept. when we needed him.

6. 3B Mike Lamb/Billy Hall- Mike Lamb was a great as a pinch hitter. Bill Hall needs to step up.

7. CF Mike Cameron- I think they should trade for Melky Cabrera.

8. C Jason Kendall- He should let Mike Rivera play more than 15 games.

Here's the Bullpen:

Mitch Stetter

Tim Dillard

Todd Coffey

David Riske

Jorge Julio- Closer? Why not? I say give him a shot at it.

Carlos Villanueva/Seth McClung- If one of them isn't a starter.

R.J. Swindle- New acquisition, never heard of him before.

The Bench:

Trot Nixon RF/LF?

Alcides Escobar SS/2B?

Scott Thorman 1B

Tony Gwynn Jr. OF

Hopefully, Doug Melvin can bring in another decent starter to round out the rotation so we can keep Villy and Big Red in the already shabby bullpen. Mota and Gagne can pack their bags and get the hell out. Salomon Torres is already gone, and he was a savior.

I would like to see him bring in another bat as well, to go with Ryan and Prince.

I know it's unlikely, but I wish Ray Durham would stay with us. He can help progress Rickie more and provide a solid switch hitter every now and then.

I like the Trot Nixon signing, he'll be a good left-handed bat off the bench, but let's hope he can still play in the field too.

Mat Gamel appears to almost be ready to play in the bigs. I think Alcides Escobar is ready. If worse comes to worst, he take over at short and we can move JJ over the third and trade Billy Hall or trade JJ depending on whatever is most beneficial.

Whatever happens, the Brewers will still be my favorite team.

NFC Playoff Jibber-Jabber

Atlanta @ Arizona- Saturday 3:30 p.m. Central

I can't find any reason why Arizona can win this game. Atlanta is a great story, probably the feel-good story of '08. They can really run the ball and I am big Matt Ryan guy. I think that since Arizona clinched the division in Week 5 they have played like garbage. Of course, it is tough to doubt that aerial attack that Kurt Warner and the boys bring. But, I like Atlanta in a decent game. 27-20.

Philadelphia @ Minnesota- Sunday 3:30 p.m. Central

I think Philly is really gonna get on a roll now after stomping America's team last week to knock them out of the picture. I couldn't get enough of it myself. Adrian Peterson won't quite get his 100 yards in this one. Not against that defense. I like to think that Brian Westbrook is probably a top 3 RB in the NFL, he'll show it against the Vikes D. Not so much in the running game but in the short passing game and screens and such. I have to take the Eagles. 21-17.

This would mean that Philly would go to New York and Atlanta goes to Carolina. These are both divisional matchups. The teams are familiar with each other, they would be great games. I'd probably take Philly against the G-Men if they had more on offense. No deep threats. The Giants will move on to the NFC Championship game against Carolina as they will take care of business with Atlanta. Too much from DeAngelo and J-Stew.

This sets up a rematch between the New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers. There are two differences this time and they are: it decides who represents the NFC in the Super Bowl, and Carolina will win this time. They will avenge themselves in New York this time.

This will set up the Super Bowl with a Carolina and Pittsburgh matchup. Wow, I can't wait.

AFC Playoff Jibber-Jabber

Happy New Year Errbody!

Here's the fun stuff. Trying to make predictions on who's going to advance in the NFL playoffs. This is going to be a difficult one to predict, especially without an undefeated team in the mix this year.

AFC:

Indianapolis @ San Diego- Saturday, 7 p.m. Central

This is the toughest one of the Wild Card round to decide on, because both teams are coming in hot. The Colts were 3-4 at one point early this season, now their 12-4, winners of nine straight. The Chargers were 4-8 and completely dead to rights a month ago, now they are 8-8 and winners of the atrocious AFC West. San Diego has the home-field, but I think Peyton and the boys are going to be a little too tough for the Super Chargers, the Chargers have been too inconsistent throughout the season. Colts win 23-17.

Baltimore @ Miami- Sunday, Noon Central

It's been a dream season for Parcells, HC Tony Sparano, Chad Pennington and the rest of the Dolphins, as for the Ravens too. I think the ball is over for Miami, Darius Rucker will be crying after this one. Ravens win a tough one, 24-14.

This means that Baltimore is going to Tennessee and Indy is going to Pittsburgh.

Oh boy, I'd hate to be an offensive player in the BAL-TEN game. I like the Ravens to knock off the Titans to go to the AFC Championship game against Pittsburgh who will beat Indianapolis at home.

Meaning that Baltimore heads up to Pittsburgh for another rematch in the AFC Championship.

They'll be lucky if they combine for 20 points in this one, with Pittsburgh coming out on top to go to the Super Bowl against my TBD NFC pick.

Penn State v. USC in the Rose Bowl

The Penn State Nittany Lions have the pleasure of traveling all the way across the country to play a road game against Southern Cal today. Yikes, right?

A lot of people think that this game is gonna be a disaster from the opening gun. I disagree. I think Penn State has done some things this year to show that they have a definite chance to compete in this ball game. Joe Pa will have the troops ready to go. Don't be suprised if Penn State doesn't have the lead in this one for a bit. But, having said that, I don't think they will ultimately win the game, but it will be closer than everyone thinks. It's gonna be within two scores. I'll say USC wins 28-17.
